Show Me Love – A Concert for the World Refugee Day 2023

June 20, 2023 @ 8:00 pm

Join us on 20 June 8pm at the DISSIDENT club for an unforgettable night of live music with London duo Ooberfuse featuring Kurdish refugee folk singer Newroz Oremari. Now based in London, Newroz had to flee Iraq where he faced the threat of execution for singing songs critical of the harsh regime of Saddam Hussein.
Newroz Oremari is a Kurdish folk singer. As a teenager growing up in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, he was told he would be executed if he was caught singing – he and his father even had to sign a pledge saying that they accepted the death penalty if they did so. He joined the Kurdish resistance, ending up in prison and even taking on multiple identities – including that of an Emirati Oil Tycoon – in his quest to be able to sing freely in his native language.
Ooberfuse is an alternative pop songwriting duo from Woolwich, London. One of Ooberfuse’s strengths is their live performance, having played hundreds of gigs all over the world. They are equally at home performing to an audience of 2 million in Madrid, to hundreds in one of Rio de Janeiro’s notorious favelas, or in front of the House of Lords in the UK. They recently toured the UK, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Canada, the Philippines, China, India, Romania and Iraq. They have graced the stage of some of Britain’s most prestigious venues – including the O2 in Greenwich, Leicester Square Theatre, and London Palladium. Support for their music has come from Music Week, BBC Introducing, Rolling Stone India, Guardian Music, DJ Mag. The band has recently completed two national UK tours supporting Heather Small (M People) and The Overtones.
